OHARA KOSON: POPPY FLOWER IN BLOOM By Ohara Koson (1878-1945), signed Shoson and sealed Shoson Japan, c. 1931-1933 Color woodblock print on paper. Vertical oban. Signed Shoson and sealed Shoson; publisher Watanabe Shozaburo, sealed to the lower left with the ‘D’ seal (corresponding to a dating of 1931-1941). Title Poppy Flower in Bloom. Stamped to the lower back ‘Made in Japan’. Stunning depiction of rose-colored poppy blossoms and buds on leafy stems, backed by a vibrant maroon ground. SIZE of the sheet 37.7 x 25.9 cm Ohara Koson (1877-1945) was a Japanese painter and woodblock print designer of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, part of the shin-hanga (new prints) movement. He is famous as a master of kacho-e (bird-and-flower) designs. Throughout a prolific career, in which he created around 500 prints, he went by three different titles: Ohara Hoson, Ohara Shoson, and Ohara Koson.
