Signed Shiro Kasamatsu; publisher: Unsodo Han with Unsodo 'Gei' watermark to the bottom-left edge. Title Char Fishing. A man standing atop craggy rocks fishing for iwana (char). SIZE of the sheet 40.5 x 27.3 cm, SIZE incl. frame 57.5 x 44 cm Shiro Kasamatsu (1898-1991) was a renowned Japanese print artist known for his contributions to the shin-hanga movement. He began his artistic training at the age of 13 under Kaburaki Kiyokata (1878-1973), studying painting and printmaking. In 1919, he caught the attention of publisher Watanabe Shozaburo (1885-1962) who commissioned him to design woodblock prints. In the 1950s, Kasamatsu changed his publishing partner to Unsōdō in Kyoto, creating over 100 prints for them, mostly in shin-hanga style featuring traditional subjects. This partnership provided him with a stable income and enabled him to explore other artistic endeavors.
