UTAGAWA HIROSHIGE II: TRUE VIEW OF MOUNT ASAMA IN SHINANO PROVINCE By Utagawa Hiroshige II (Shigenobu; 1826–1869), signed Hiroshige ga Japan, dated 1859 Color woodblock print on paper. Title Shinshu Asama-yama shinkei (True View of Mount Asama in Shinano Province), from the series Shokoku meisho hyakkei (One Hundred Famous Views in the Various Provinces). Mount Asama in Shinano Province smolders with dramatic beauty, the smoke wafting in an array of colors. It is autumn, as may be seen from the foliage, and two travelers must fight the wind as they walk along the path in the foreground. One is seen chasing his hat. SIZE of the sheet 33 x 22.5 cm, SIZE incl. frame 41.7 x 31.5 cm This volcano rises more than 2,500 meters high in Gunma Prefecture, near Nagano Prefecture. Small eruptions from this active volcano are apparently not uncommon, and its most recent minor eruption was in August 2019. There was a well-documented and very destructive eruption in 1783 that destroyed the town of Kanbara, and the debris flow even reached the Tone River and flowed into the Pacific Ocean some 200 km away. Utagawa Hiroshige II (Shigenobu; 1826–1869) was born in 1829 with the original name of Chinpei Suzuki. According to tradition, his master Ando Hiroshige, gave him an artist name - usually derived from the first or last part of the master's name. Hiroshige I first gave his gifted pupil the name Shigenobu. Shigenobu was then integrated into the family and was adopted by the great ukiyo-e master when his own son had died in 1845. Hiroshige I (Ando) died in 1858 and Shigenobu took his master's go calling himself Hiroshige Ichiryusai, generally referred to as Utagawa Hiroshige II.
