A LARGE EMBROIDERED SILK ‘RAKAN HANDAKA SONJA’ PANEL Japan, 19th century Finely embroidered in various shades of red, brown, black, gold, bronze, and blue, the panel depicts Handaka Sonja seated next to his dragon. The rakan (arhat) is shown gently stroking the beast, whose mouth is wide open. The central embroidery is framed by a silk brocade border and mounted on a jute frame. SIZE 168 x 127 cm Handaka Sonja (Sanskrit: Arhat Panthaka) is one of the sixteen disciples of Buddha, often depicted alongside his pet dragon, which he keeps in an alms bowl or gourd. Museum comparison: Compare a closely related painting from the mid-14th century, which served as the inspiration for this piece, at the National Museum of Asian Art, Smithsonian Institute, accession number F1904.302.
