TOKAIBO RYUFU: A FINE SCROLL PAINTING OF DANCING SKELETONS By Tokaibo Ryufu, signed Odo Shamon Tokaibo Ryufu hitsu Japan, dated 1894 Ink on paper. Mounted as a hanging scroll on a silk frame with wood jikusaki (roller ends). Finely painted to depict six skeletons dancing joyously. Inscriptions: To the top-left, signed Odo Shamon Tokaibo Ryufu hitsu [Painted by Tokaibo Ryufu, a profane shramana practitioner] and dated January 9, Meiji 27 (corresponding to 1894). Accompanied by an inscribed poem,凡夫伽種蒔佉即浮陀伽骨折三世之/ 因果時耺 須婆奈留昧頭無辺羅々々々々 [Ordinary mortals sow karmic seeds/ The Buddha breaks the bones of karma across the three worlds/ Turning (the wheel), all delusions vanish into boundless nothingness, ra‑ra‑ra‑ra]. Image SIZE 141.5 x 31 cm, SIZE incl. mounting 196 x 43.3 cm The painting alludes to the Japanese folklore and dance known as Tanemaki Gonbei. Each year at the vernal equinox, the festival takes place at Hosen-ji Temple and Tanemaki Gonbei-no-Sato, Mt. Binnoyama. The object to be prayed, Gonbei, is famous in the saying “Crows fly out after Gonbei sows the seed”. Interesting events like the Gonbei dance, make-up parade and sacrifice dance take place during the festival.
