SHOKEN: A FINE SCROLL PAINTING OF A SKELETON WEDDING By Shoken, signed Shoken ga with seal Shoken Japan, dated 1922 Ink and watercolors on paper. Mounted as a hanging scroll on a silk frame with wood jikusaki (roller ends). Finely painted to depict a skeleton bride dressed in a leaf and blossom skirt accompanied by her groom holding an umbrella that shelters the pair. Inscriptions: To the top-right, signed 色即是空、大正壬戌首夏、松軒画 Shikisoku Zeku, Taisho mizunoe-inu shuka, Shoken ga [Form is emptiness, at the beginning of the summer of Taisho 11 (1922), painted by Shoken] and seal 松軒 Shoken. The inscription is a Zen dictum: “Form is nothing other than emptiness, emptiness is nothing other than form (shikisoku zeku, kusoku zeshiki).” Image SIZE 125.5 x 44.5 cm, SIZE incl. mounting 191 x 58.5 cm
