OTANI SONYU AND IGUCHI KASHU: A PAIR OF HANDSCROLLS DEPICTING BIRDS IN A WINTER LANDSCAPE By Otani Sonyu (1885-1939) and Iguchi Kashu (1880-1930) Japan, Taisho period (1912-1926) Ink, watercolors, and gouache on silk. Mounted as a hanging scroll on a silk brocade frame with ivory jikusaki (roller ends). Finely painted to depict a heron wading in shallow waters under a willow and a wagtail seated atop a lotus stem, a second stem with a disheveled lotus seed towering above, and decaying leaves below. Inscriptions: The first scroll signed 尊由 Sonyu with seal 心斎 Shinsai and the second signed 華秋 Kashu with seal 華秋. The tomobako with a label,‘掛物部、寒汀二幅對、尊由華秋筆、第百七十六[…]號、揚輝荘蔵 Kakemono bu, Kantei nifuku tsui, Sonyu Kashu hitsu, dai hyakunanajuroku-go, Yokiso zo [Hanging scroll painting collections, a pair of scrolls depicting "Chilly Riverbank", painted by Sonyu and Kashu, number 176 (?), the collection of the Yokiso].
