拍品描述
AN ALBUM OF 10 SHUNGA PAINTINGS Japan, late 19th- early 20th century, Meiji (1868-1912) to Taisho period (1912-1926) Ink, watercolor, and gouache on silk, each leaf mounted within gold-flecked paper borders and bound in an album with a purple silk cover. The album comprises ten finely painted scenes of intimate encounters, including aristocratic couples, a samurai with a courtesan, and a woman depicted in private reverie while contemplating an illustrated shunga album. One composition introduces a particularly playful and self-referential conceit, as the erotic album shown within the painting itself contains further amorous imagery, while a partially concealed couple in the background extends the same theme across multiple layers of the scene.
