A FINE FOUR-PANEL BYOBU (FOLDING SCREEN) DEPICTING MANDARIN DUCKS IN A POND Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912) to Taisho period (1912-1926) Ink, watercolors, gouache, and gold leaf on paper. Mounted on brocade on four black lacquered panels with brass fittings. The screen depicting a pair of mandarin ducks swimming in a lotus pond, the surface of the water rendered with gentle ripples. SIZE 158.4 x 65.6 cm Mandarin ducks, animals believed to mate for life, symbolize conjugal harmony and fidelity. They are frequently depicted alongside blossoming lotus flowers as an emblem of harmony.
