† HATTORI GORO: A FINE SIX-PANEL SILVER-FOIL GROUND ‘LANDSCAPE’ BYOBU (FOLDING SCREEN) By Hattori Goro (1869-1930), signed with two seals Japan, dated 1907 Ink, watercolors, and silver foil on paper. Mounted on six black-lacquered wood panels with gilt-metal fittings. Finely painted in the typical style of Chinese landscape paintings to depict imaginary scenery depicting pavilions nestled between thick vegetation, framed by towering rocky outcrops, all overlooking a vast river with meandering boats, and further hills in the distance. Inscriptions: To the sixth panel, signed with two seals 丁未之春寫并題王右丞詩、於北越柏浦掬翠園、五老山人 Hinoto-hitsuji no haru Wang Youcheng no shi utsushi heidai, Hokuetsu Kashiwaura Kikusui-en, Goro sanjin [The poem was originally composed by Wang Wei and inscribed on the screen by Goro Sanjin (Goro, the man of mountains), at the Kikusui-en Studio, Kashiwaura, Hokuetsu region, in the spring of hinoto-hitsuji (corresponding to 1907)]. Further inscribed with the Chinese poem by the famous Tang dynasty poet Wang Wei “Cold mountains turn deep green./ Autumn waters flow gently day by day./ Leaning on my staff outside the brushwood gate,/ I face the wind and listen to the evening cicadas./ At the ferry crossing, the last light of sunset lingers./ In the village, a solitary plume of smoke rises./ Again I meet the madman Jieyu, drunk,/ Raving in song before the Five‑Willow trees.” SIZE 173.5 x 348 cm 13% VAT will be added to the hammer price additional to the buyer's premium - only for buyers within the EU.
