KANO TANSHIN: A SIX-PANEL SCREEN (BYOBU) DEPICTING A LANDSCAPE SCENE FROM THE UJI REGION By Kano Tanshin (1785-1836), signed Tanshinsai hogen ga Japan, early 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868) Ink, watercolors, gouache, and gold leaf on paper. Mounted on silk brocade on six wood panels. Finely painted to depict a serene landscape from the Uji region, featuring a panoramic view of distant mountains, surrounded by lush cherry blossoms and towering pines. A flock of cranes elegantly soars across the sky, a bustling atelier scene shows skilled artists at work, engaged in the meticulous creation of hanging scrolls, while nearby, two artisans weave baskets with delicate precision. A peaceful path winds through the landscape, leading to a bridge that crosses a flowing river, where tea pickers can be seen busy at work. Inscriptions: To the right side, inscribed Tanshinsai hogen ga 探信斎法眼畫 [Painted by Tanshinsai, with the hogen title]. SIZE 182.5 x 365 cm Uji is a historic city in Kyoto Prefecture, Japan, located between Kyoto and Nara, renowned as the birthplace of Japanese green tea and a center of tea culture. Famous for premium matcha and UNESCO World Heritage sites like Byodoin Temple, it offers a scenic, traditional atmosphere along the Uji River. Kano Tanshin (1785–1836) was a painter of the Kano school active in the late Edo period and the seventh-generation head of the Kajibashi Kano family, official painters to the Tokugawa shogunate. Known by the art names Seifu and Kosai, he succeeded to the family name in 1796 upon his father’s retirement. Although the Kajibashi branch had declined in prominence compared to the Kobikicho and Nakabashi Kano lineages, Morimichi worked to restore its status, studying the style of his illustrious predecessor Kano Tan’yū and reviving the mokkotsu (boneless) painting technique. In 1825 he was awarded the title of Hogen, and in 1834 was elevated to the prestigious rank of goishinami, granting him direct audience with the shogun. In addition to orthodox Kano subjects, he also explored genre painting in a manner influenced by ukiyo-e, and his pupils included Oki Ichiga.
