† A FINE AND LARGE SIX-PANEL ‘PEACOCK AND PEONIES’ BYOBU (FOLDING SCREEN) Japan, 19th century, late Edo period (1615–1868) Ink, watercolor, gouache, and gold and silver foil on paper, mounted within silk-brocade borders as a six-panel folding screen with a wood frame and metal fittings. Finely painted on a gold ground with a stately peacock striding amid luxuriant peonies and fantastically pierced blue-green rocks. The bird’s long, eye-spotted train sweeps dramatically across the left half of the composition, its plumage intricately detailed and heightened in gold and silver, while drifting banks of silver cloud frame the scene above and below.
