Ɏ GYOKUSHO: A FINE IVORY NETSUKE OF ONO NO TOFU By Suzuki Gyokusho, signed Gyokusho Japan, 20th century Finely carved and beautifully stained, depicting Ono no Tofu, the celebrated Heian-period calligrapher, shown standing in geta and leaning forward with a closed umbrella in one hand, his other hand raised touching his chin. The figure is dressed in loose robes decorated with neatly incised floral mon, the sleeves finely detailed with toggles and cord fastenings, the face carved with a gentle, amused expression beneath a soft cap. The umbrella, footwear, robe folds, hair, and textile textures are carefully rendered and stained for contrast. Himotoshi through the back and underneath, signed GYOKUSHO under one shoe. LENGTH 4.6 cm In despair after trying seven times to rise to a higher position at the imperial court the calligrapher Ono no Tofu (Ono no Michikaze, 894-964) takes a walk alongside a river. There he spots a frog trying to reach the sloping branch of a willow. Despite seven unsuccessful attempts the frog perseveres and succeeds on the eighth leap. Just as Ono no Tofu who regains courage and applies once again to the emperor finally being appointed minister.
