Ɏ MASAYOSHI: A RARE IVORY OKIMONO STYLE NETSUKE OF THE LEGEND OF THE TONGUE-CUT SPARROW (SHITAKIRI SUZUME) By Masayoshi, signed Masayoshi 正義 Japan, Tokyo, Meiji period (1868-1912) Finely carved as a lively scene from the folk tale Shitakiri Suzume (The Tongue-Cut Sparrow), showing the kindly old man seated with a large open fan, surrounded by two small sparrow attendants in human dress. One sparrow stands before him holding a tray, while another kneels nearby with an offering, the group arranged around small boxes and implements. The old man’s robes are finely incised with floral motifs, while the sparrows’ garments, fan ribs, hair, and facial features are carefully detailed and stained for contrast. Natural himtoshi and signed MASAYOSHI underneath. LENGTH 5 cm Shitakiri Suzume, or ‘The Tongue-Cut Sparrow,’ is one of Japan’s best-known folktales, centered on the contrast between kindness and greed. In the story, an old man cares for an injured sparrow, but his jealous wife cuts out the bird’s tongue and drives it away; when the old man later finds the sparrow’s home, he is rewarded for his compassion, while the greedy wife is punished for choosing the larger of two offered baskets.
