KOMIN: A FINE INLAID WOOD NETSUKE OF A SURIBACHI WITH AN OKAME AND ONI MASK By Komin, signed Komin 光珉 Japan, Edo (Tokyo), mid-19th century, Edo period (1615-1868) Finely carved as a suribachi (grinding bowl) with a finely textured interior, inlaid with a cheerful bone Okame mask to the center and applied with a mixed-metal oni mask to the exterior rim. Okame's smiling face is sensitively rendered with softly rounded features, the hair stained with sumi and the lips highlighted in red lacquer. The oni mask, finely modeled with gilt eyes and horns, bushy brows, and tightly curled hair, provides a humorous contrast to the benevolent Okame. Large asymmetrical himotoshi to the reverse, signed KOMIN within a rectangular reserve. DIAMETER 4.2 cm
