Ɏ MASAMITSU: AN IVORY NETSUKE OF A GROUP OF PUPPIES AND BIRDS By Hagiwara Masamitsu, signed Masamitsu 正光 Japan, Tokyo, Meiji period (1868–1912) Finely carved as a compact group of five puppies and two birds clambering across a large lotus leaf. The animals are arranged in lively, overlapping poses, each puppy displaying an individual expression, with the eyes finely inlaid. The broad leaf is naturalistically rendered with characteristic perforations and deeply incised radiating veins. Himotoshi to the reverse, signed MASAMITSU. LENGTH 4.5 cm Hagiwara Masamitsu was particularly admired for his tightly composed and animated studies of animals, especially dogs and rats. The present netsuke is characteristic of his work in its dense arrangement, careful observation, and playful treatment of the subject.
