SHOZAN: A RARE INLAID SEAL-TYPE (INGYO) NETSUKE OF A SUISEI By Shozan, signed Shozan Japan, 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868) Finely carved as a seal-type (ingyo) netsuke of a suisei, the mythical beast standing upright on an oval base. Its compact body is distinguished by a neatly incised tortoise carapace covering the back, a scrolling tail, and a single horn projecting from the back of the head. The face is set with mother-of-pearl eyes and teeth, lending the creature a vivid expression. The base is smoothly polished, with a central himotoshi to the underside and an inset shell plaque signed SHOZAN. HEIGHT 3.9 cm The suisei is a rarely represented mythical beast closely related in appearance to the kirin, but distinguished by the tortoise carapace on its back.
