TOKO: A LARGE AND UNUSUAL WOOD NETSUKE OF A SEATED TIGER By Toko, signed Toko to Japan, late 18th-early 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868) Powerfully carved as a remarkably bulky tiger seated in an alert pose, the rounded body conveying a strong sense of weight and volume. The forepaws are placed closely together, the tail curls neatly along one side, and the expressive face is rendered with deeply recessed, rounded eyes, a broad snout, and bared teeth. Finely incised lines define the striped fur, adding texture and vitality to the compact composition. Natural himotoshi through the body, the underside of one paw signed TOKO to [carved by Toko].
