TACHIBANA GYOKUZAN: A FINE LACQUER MANJU NETSUKE OF A RAT By Tachibana Gyokuzan, signed Gyokuzan 玉山 sei 製 and kakihan Japan, Edo (Tokyo), 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868) The two-part manju bearing a beautiful, lustrous silver ground and decorated in gold and black takamaki-e with a rat (nezumi), its tail curling and fur neatly detailed. Central himotoshi to the back, beside it the neatly lacquered signature GYOKUZAN sei [made by Gyokuzan] and with the artist’s kakihan in red. The interior of gold fundame and with a metal eyelet peg for the cord attachment. DIAMETER 4 cm For the artist see Earle, Joe [ed.] (1995) The Index of Inro Artists, p. 63 (see farthest left bottom row signature for an identical Gyokuzan玉山 signature). The artist made netsuke, inro and ojime and may have been affiliated with the Kajikawa workshop.
