SANSHO (ATTR.): A FINE OSAKA SCHOOL WOOD KYOGEN MASK NETSUKE OF IKKAKU SENNIN Attributed to Kokeisai Sansho (1871-1926), unsigned Japan, Osaka, early 20th century Finely carved as a dramatic Kyogen mask of Ikkaku Sennin, the face powerfully modeled with bulging pierced eyes beneath sharply arched brows, a broad nose, and a wide-open mouth exposing neatly carved teeth. A small horn rises prominently from the forehead, identifying the one-horned immortal, while the deeply carved contours and animated expression capture the comic vigor of traditional Japanese theater. The warm light-brown wood is attractively polished, with a central himotoshi bar to the reverse.
