拍品描述
A FINE AND RARE REVERSIBLE NOGAKU MASK NETSUKE Unsigned Japan, 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868) Finely carved as a rare reversible Nogaku mask, one side with deeply furrowed brows, pierced eyes, a broad nose, and pronounced cheeks framing a wide mouth with small teeth and fangs. When turned upside down, the design cleverly reveals a second face, the nose and brows transforming into the features of another mask with a dramatically different expression. The warm honey-brown wood is attractively polished and shows a fine, naturally grown patina. The reverse with a central himotoshi bar. HEIGHT 4.2 cm
