DEME MITSUHIDE: A FINE AND UNUSUAL WOOD MASK NETSUKE OF HOTEI By Deme Mitsuhide , signed Deme Mitsuhide, Ikkoku Ichinin saku Japan, Edo (Tokyo), late 18th to early 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868) Finely carved as an unusual rendition of Hotei, the smiling face rendered with bow-shaped brows, narrow crescent-shaped eyes, and full rounded cheeks framing a broad pierced grin exposing neatly carved teeth, all flanked by pendulous earlobes. The forehead is carved with a distinctive drop-shaped urna-like ornament, an exceptionally rare feature in representations of Hotei that lends the deity a subtly sacred appearance while distinguishing this mask from more conventional examples. The richly polished wood displays a warm, deep patina. The reverse with a central himotoshi bar and signed DEME MITSUHIDE, Ikkoku Ichinin saku [made by Deme Mitsuhide, peerless in his province].
