Ɏ A FINE IVORY NETSUKE OF A PUMPKIN, LOTUS AND SPIDER, ATTRIBUTED TO RENSAI Attributed to Ishikawa Rensai, unsigned Japan, Tokyo, Asakusa district, mid-late 19th century Finely carved as a fully ripened pumpkin (kabocha), the netsuke forms an attractively compact composition with deeply defined ribs radiating from the central stem. The surface is delicately stippled and stained, while twisting vines and leaves extend gracefully across the pumpkin. A small spider crawls across the surface. The large leaf is rendered with remarkable delicacy, from beneath which emerges a finely carved lotus bud, a characteristic feature associated with the work of Rensai. Two himotoshi are pierced to the underside.
