A FINE WOOD NETSUKE OF A HATCHING TENGU (TENGU NO TOMAGO) Unsigned Japan, early 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868) The tengu emerging from a cracked eggshell, one clawed hand grasping the edge, the other holding a fan. Both wings spreading over the shell. The mythical man-bird has an amusingly crafted expression with neatly incised, furrowed brows, long hair, an open mouth, revealing small teeth and eyes inlaid in pale translucent horn with dark pupils. Himotoshi underneath. LENGTH 3.6 cm
