Ɏ AN AMUSING OSAKA SCHOOL IVORY NETSUKE OF SHOKI CAPTURING AN ONI Unsigned Japan, Osaka, early 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868) Amusingly carved, depicting the demon queller Shoki holding down his large straw hat which covers a struggling oni whose head humorously pokes through. Clutching his iconic sword, Shoki holds the leg of the oni, the fierce struggle visible on his face, while the oni grits its teeth. Himotoshi through the straw hat.
