Ɏ A GOOD KYOTO SCHOOL IVORY NETSUKE OF HOTEI Unsigned Japan, Kyoto, late 18th century, Edo period (1615-1868) Of large triangular section, finely carved as Hotei seated at ease, his right arm resting on one knee and the left hand placed on the ground. He wears a loose robe opening to reveal his prominent potbelly, the garment neatly engraved with cloud scrolls and stylized waves. His face is set with a joyful expression, framed by pendulous earlobes. The ivory has developed an attractive warm yellow patina. Himotoshi to the back. The style closely relates to the work of Yoshitomo and his followers, including Yoshimasa.
