A FINE KYOTO SCHOOL WOOD NETSUKE OF A RECLINING DEER School of Rantei, unsigned Japan, Kyoto, early 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868) The recumbent deer is depicted in a relaxed pose, its legs neatly tucked beneath its body as it rests on its side. Its head is raised and turned back to the left, with elegant antlers gracefully arching behind. The wood is attractively polished, accentuating the spine with fine detailing, while the snout and eyes are delicately incised and inlaid with dark horn. Asymmetrical himotoshi underneath.
