Ɏ AN EARLY AND LARGE IVORY NETSUKE OF A SHISHI AND YOUNG Unsigned Japan, late 18th-early 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868) Powerfully carved as a recumbent shishi, its forepaws resting atop a brocade ball while a playful cub nestles protectively beneath its body, creating a compact and harmonious composition. The parent shishi is rendered with a fierce yet benevolent expression, the deeply carved eyes, open mouth, and luxuriant flowing mane and tail conveying both strength and vitality. The cub, carved in charming contrast, is modeled with softly rounded features. The ivory has developed a beautifully worn, warm patina from generations of handling. Natural himotoshi.
