Ɏ A FINE IVORY NETSUKE OF A RAT ON A DRIED SALMON Unsigned Japan, 18th century, Edo period (1615-1868) Naturalistically carved as a rat on a desiccated fish (himono), a classic dish during Japanese New Year (Shogatsu). The mouth of the fish is open showing rows of sharp teeth and the scales are neatly rendered. The rodent crouching with its tail trailing over the edge of the body. Good asymmetrical himotoshi through one side. The ivory bearing a fine patina.
