Ɏ A CHARMING AND RARE IVORY NETSUKE OF A PUPPY WITH TWO BALLS Unsigned Japan, Kyoto or Osaka, late 18th to early 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868) Finely carved as a reclining puppy wearing a ribbon tied around its neck, with a small cloth pendant hanging below. Its forepaws rest upon two smooth balls, an unusual variation on the more familiar single-ball composition. The head is raised slightly, the large inlaid eyes lending the animal a lively expression, while the short muzzle, nose, and gently parted mouth are carefully modeled. The fur is rendered in finely incised, sumi-stained lines, contrasting with the smoothly polished surfaces of the two spheres. Natural himotoshi. LENGTH 4.3 cm Auction comparison: Compare a related ivory netsuke of a dog with a single ball, dated to the early 19th century and measuring 4.5 cm in length, at Bonhams, Fine Japanese Art, 16 May 2016, London, lot 101 (sold for GBP 2,000, or approximately EUR 3,200 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing). Unlike the present rare example, the Bonhams netsuke is carved with only one ball.
