Ɏ A LARGE AND CHARMING IVORY NETSUKE OF A SEATED DOG Unsigned Japan, 18th century, Edo period (1615-1868) Charmingly carved as a seated dog, the animal shown with its head turned gently to the side, one foreleg extended and the other raised to the chest. The face with an alert yet endearing expression, detailed with large horn-inlaid eyes, neatly incised brows, a smiling mouth, and long floppy ears. The body is smoothly modeled with rounded haunches, carefully carved paws, and the tail curled tightly against the back. The ivory is attractively polished and of a warm creamy tone with a honey-colored patina to the reverse. Generously excavated and asymmetrical himotoshi to the back.
