Ɏ A LARGE AND POWERFUL IVORY NETSUKE DEPICTING A GRAZING HORSE Unsigned Japan, Kyoto, 18th century, Edo period (1615-1868) Boldly carved as a sturdy horse standing with its head lowered between the forelegs in a naturalistic grazing pose, the compact composition enlivened by the gracefully arched neck and sensitively modeled musculature. The mane falls in finely incised, gently undulating strands along the neck, while the facial features and hooves are neatly detailed. The ivory is beautifully worn and has acquired an attractive warm yellow to deep honey-toned patina from extensive handling. Natural himotoshi formed by the spaces between the limbs.
