Ɏ A LARGE IVORY NETSUKE OF CHORYO AND KOSEKIKO Unsigned Japan, late 18th to early 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868) Finely carved as Choryo riding a dragon and presenting the recovered shoe to Kosekiko, who is seated on horseback above. The figures are arranged on a naturalistically carved openwork base, finely incised and stained. Choryo is depicted with a joyful expression, while the dragon coils along the side, its scaly body and fierce gaze directed upward toward the horse. The ivory bears an attractive warm yellow-honey patina. Natural himotoshi. LENGTH 4.7 cm, HEIGHT 5 cm Choryo, known in China as Zhang Liang, was a celebrated strategist of the early Han dynasty. According to legend, the sage Kosekiko tested his resolve by casting a shoe into a river inhabited by a dragon. Choryo recovered it and returned it to the sage, who thereafter instructed him in the art of war. The present netsuke captures this moment, with Choryo triumphantly presenting the shoe while standing upon the subdued dragon.
