Ɏ A TALL IVORY NETSUKE OF A SARUMAWASHI AND MONKEY Unsigned Japan, 18th century, Edo period (1615-1868) The tall and flattened ivory netsuke finely carved as a monkey trainer (sarumawashi) dressed in a neatly incised robe, turning to his right, his mouth agape, one hand placed on his food basket as the monkey on his shoulder pensively strokes its chin. Large, asymmetrical himotoshi through the back. The ivory bearing a superb, deep patina.
