BUNSAI: A LACQUERED WOOD KISERUZUTSU (PIPE CASE) WITH LEAFY VINES AND A MANTIS By Bunsai, signed Bunsai 文哉 Japan, late 19th century, Meiji period (1868-1912) Of muso-zutsu form, exquisitely crafted with gold, silver, and black takamaki-e on a roughly treated wood ground, simulating treebark, creating a striking contrast between texture and refinement. The design features delicately trailing leafy vines, their graceful tendrils meandering across the surface. A meticulously rendered golden mantis extends from the side to the front. Signed to the side BUNSAI. With a shibuichi rim and cord attachment. LENGTH 21.7 cm The design follows the artistic style of the Zeshin school, suggesting that Bunsai was likely a member. This connection may also extend to Fukushima Taisai, as they share the kanji character Sai 哉 in their names (see auction comparison for a similar work).
