拍品描述

A BAMBOO ‘TIGER AND DRAGON’ SAGEMONO SET Japan, 19th century, Meiji period (1868-1912) The kiseruzutsu (pipe case) of muso-zutsu form, carved from a section of bamboo and mounted around the mouth with a silver rim. The cord attachment suspends a string with a glass ojime and a bamboo-root tonkotsu (tobacco container), finely carved in takabori with a ferocious tiger and a sinuous dragon amid scrolling clouds. LENGTH 9 cm (tonkotsu), LENGTH 20.1 cm (kiseruzutsu) The tiger and dragon form one of the most enduring pairings in East Asian art, embodying opposing yet complementary forces. The dragon represents the heavens and yang, while the tiger is associated with the earth and yin. Together they symbolize balance, strength, courage, and resilience.
