A FIVE-CASE GOLD LACQUER INRO WITH BOYS IMITATING A KOREAN PROCESSION Japan, 19th century Of upright form and oval section, the lustrous kinji ground finely decorated in gold, silver, and iro-e takamaki-e with three boys dressed as foreign musicians, probably imitating a Korean diplomatic procession. One side depicts two musicians, one clashing cymbals and the other blowing a long trumpet, while the reverse shows a third boy dancing energetically while beating a drum carried on his back. The figures wear elaborate Korean-style costumes and distinctive ceremonial headdresses, the lively procession framed above by bands of stylized clouds embellished with gold kirigane. The interior cases are finished in nashiji with gold fundame rims. With a carved red-lacquer ojime. HEIGHT 10.2 cm, LENGTH 6.4 cm With a wood tomobako (storage box). The subject belongs to a broader tradition in Japanese art of depicting children playfully reenacting the elaborate processions of foreign ambassadors and their accompanying musicians.
