A THREE-CASE LACQUER INRO DEPICTING CRANES AND YOUNG BENEATH A PINE TREE Unsigned Japan, 18th to early 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868) Of upright rectangular form and unusual hexagonal section, bearing a lustrous roiro ground decorated with gold, silver, and red takamaki-e and hiramaki-e, to depict a continuous scene of a pair of gracefully standing red-crested cranes, their plumage meticulously rendered, at the base of a lush, gnarled pine tree, whose trunk delicately detailed in gold kirigane and one of its branches supports a nest with a small group of chicks. The interior cases finished in dark brown lacquer with gold fundame rims. HEIGHT 8.4 cm, LENGTH 5.4 cm
