Goichi Mitani (1919–2017) was a distinguished Japanese lacquer artist, closely associated with the Wajima-nuri tradition. He is particularly recognized for his significant contributions to the development of the chinkin technique, a decorative method combining lacquer with pigments and powders of gold and silver, which he transformed through the innovative use of diverse metal oxides and finely processed powders to achieve subtle gradations and an expanded palette of luminous, delicately nuanced effects. Drawing inspiration from the natural environment of Wajima, where he spent his childhood, his work frequently depicts animals, plants, flowers, fish, and birds with refined sensitivity. In recognition of his achievements, he was designated a Person of Cultural Merit in 2015 and was also awarded the Japan Art Academy Prize across multiple editions of the Nitten Exhibition.
