SARATANI TOMIZO: A FINE LACQUER ‘BAMBOO SHOOTS’ KOGO (INCENSE BOX) By Saratani Tomizo (b. 1949), signed Tomi Tsukuru Japan, early 2000s, Heisei era (1989-2019) Rectangular in form with rounded corners, crafted from a section near one of the nodes of a bamboo stem, finely decorated in gold and dark brown takamaki-e, inlaid with mother-of-pearl, and enriched with gyobu-nashiji, depicting on the sides various bamboo leaf branches against the natural bamboo texture, extending onto the gilded edges of the box. The kogo is fitted with a lacquered hardwood cover, applied with three bamboo shoots (takenoko) and decorated in gold takamaki-e and hiramaki-e, to depict additional leafy bamboo stalks. The underside of the cover is embellished with gold togidashi-e and e-nashiji to represent lush bamboo groves. The underside of the box, with edges adorned in radiant nashiji, signed in gold script TOMI tsukuru [made by Tomi]. HEIGHT 4.8 cm, LENGTH 11.2 cm Saratani Tomizo was born in 1949 in Kyoto and has spent his life working on traditional Japanese lacquer (urushi). After his studies under various teachers, in 1975 he moved to Vienna as an instructor and restorer for the MAK, the Austrian Museum of Applied Arts, where he supervised the restorations of lacquered furniture in Austrian public collections for eight years. He then worked as lacquer restorer and netsuke artist in London, Chicago, and his hometown in Hokkaido and in 2003 he decided to dedicate himself solely to his original works. The subjects Tomizo picks are very often animals, which he is able to render with impressive naturalism.
