RAKUZEN II: A FINE KANSHITSU LACQUER 'CRESCENT MOON' HANGING FLOWER VASE (MIKAZUKI KABIN) By Rakuzen II (b. 1915), signed Rakuzen Japan, 20th century, Showa period (1926-1989) Of circular form evocative of a crescent moon, the lustrous black lacquer surface decorated with overlapping bands of gold, silver, and red lacquer, and further embellished with inlays of finely fragmented eggshell. The interior finished in a reddish-brown lacquer overlaid with gold foil, terminating in a slender handle fitted with a hanging loop. The vessel mounted with six brass fittings designed for suspension. LENGTH 44.5 cm (excl. fittings) With the original wood storage box (tomobako), inscribed Kanshitsu maru tsuri hanaire 乾漆丸釣花入 [A round hanging flower vessel (hanaire) made in dry lacquer], signed and sealed Rakuzen. With a smaller wood box for the original six-piece brass hanging fittings, inscribed Kanshitsu maru tsuri hanaire kanagu, rokko 乾漆丸釣花入金具、六箇 [Six pieces of metal fittings for the round hanging flower vessel (hanaire) made in dry lacquer], and a printed sheet in Japanese and English containing the artist’s biography. Rakuzen II (b. 1915), also known as Yamada Yutaka, studied in the lacquer department of the Kyoto Municipal School of Arts and Crafts. He subsequently trained under his father, Rakuzen I, in the technique of dry lacquer (kanshitsu), thereby continuing the family lineage in this highly specialized craft tradition.
