A LACQUER ‘INTERLACED WAGASA’ READING TABLE Japan, first half of the 20th century, Taisho (1912-1926) to Showa period (1926-1989) Composed of several wooden components designed for assembly, consisting of a large rectangular box fitted with two openwork foliate supports, joined by two cross-braces, which in turn sustain a slanted writing board. The surface is finished with a finely polished, lustrous roiro ground, decorated in gold, silver, and red takamaki-e and togidashi maki-e, further enriched with gold kirigane and mother-of-pearl inlay, to depict on one of the long sides of the box an arrangement of parasols (wagasa) viewed from above, their forms enclosing plum blossom motifs and integrated within stylized fish-shaped outlines, accompanied on each lateral side with theatrical masks, all set against a ground sprinkled with minute gold flakes. The transverse brace, of curved profile, decorated with a family crest composed of hawk feathers and a large butterfly, finished with a pair of large hanging tassels. HEIGHT 47.2 cm, LENGTH 49.3 cm
