A SMALL LACQUER ‘SEASONAL BLOSSOMS’ DISPLAY STAND Japan, 19th century, late Edo (1615-1868) to Meiji period (1868-1912) Of typical low table form, the rectangular tabletop with lobed corners supported on four short, curved legs with swollen shoulders, resting on a rectangular stand with a gently undulating lower edge. The surface bears a dark brown lacquer ground decorated in gold takamaki-e and hiramaki-e, further enriched with gold-foil appliqués, to depict on the shoulders various floral arrangements, including chrysanthemums, prunus blossoms, and peonies, set against a hanabishi diaper pattern that further extends across the remaining surfaces of the table, while the sides of the stand are decorated with a distinctive cross-hatched pattern.
