A GOLD AND BLACK LACQUER FOUR-PANEL ‘TOKUGAWA MON’ FOLDING TABLE SCREEN Japan, 19th century, late Edo period (1615-1868) Finely constructed from four hinged wood panels, the gilt-metal mounts and hinges delicately engraved with foliate designs. The front is covered in lustrous black and dark-brown lacquer and richly decorated in gold takamaki-e and hiramaki-e, further heightened with applied gold foil. Each panel is divided into a series of framed compartments, the upper registers centered by the Tokugawa clan’s triple-hollyhock crest (aoi mon), while the lower sections contain lobed medallions enclosing a variety of flowering plants, all reserved against an intricate hanabishi ground. Further horizontal panels are decorated with scrolling floral motifs. The reverse is similarly embellished with triple-hollyhock crests against a kinji ground, accompanied by further floral designs, including lotus blossoms rendered in bold relief.
