MATSUDA SANAO: A SET OF SIX MOTHER-OF-PEARL-INLAID ECHIZEN LACQUER TRAYS By Matsuda Sanao (b. 1934), signed Sanao with kakihan Japan, Sabae City, Fukui Prefecture, late 20th century, Heisei period (1989-2019) Comprising six trays, each with a lustrous black lacquer ground centered by a circular medallion decorated in silver takamaki-e and hiramaki-e, inlaid with aogai flakes, to depict cherry blossoms, peonies, and magnolias amidst verdant grasses, with scattered clouds and stylized waves, enclosed within borders of eggshell inlay and luminous nashiji. Each tray signed to the reverse SANAO with kakihan. SIZE 38.1 x 38.1 cm (each) With a wooden storage box (tomobako), inscribed Kinkanshoku no Utage 金環触之宴 (金環日食の宴) [The Revelry of the Ringed Sun]; six cardboard storage boxes and fitted fabric covers, one for each tray; a small box containing a black lacquer tray stand; two biographical leaflets relating to the artist; and the artist’s name card. Matsuda Sanao (b. 1934) studied lacquerware under the guidance of his father, Matsuda Hideyoshi. He exhibited at the Echizen Lacquerware Exhibition on numerous occasions and was awarded the Prefectural Cultural Association Newcomer Award in 1968 in recognition of his achievements in the field.
