A FINE PAIR OF THREE-TIERED HEXAGONAL LACQUER HOKAI BAKO (FOOD CONTAINERS) WITH MORNING GLORY (ASAGAO) Japan, Meiji period (1868–1912) to Taisho period (1912–1926) Each of hexagonal form and composed of three stacked tiers, the fitted covers and matching trays finished in lustrous roiro lacquer and finely decorated in gold and silver hiramaki-e with trailing morning glory (asagao) vines and blossoms. The elegant compositions extend seamlessly across the inrobuta (flush-fitting) lids, sides, and trays, the delicate tendrils and leaves rendered with refined variation in relief and metallic tones. The interiors are finished in polished roiro lacquer with fundame rims. HEIGHT 33 cm Each with a wood storage box.
