A REMARKABLE FOUR-TIERED LACQUER ‘CHRYSANTHEMUMS IN A BAMBOO BASKET ‘JUBAKO (STACKED FOOD CONTAINER) Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912) Of upright rectangular form with rounded corners, bearing a lustrous roiro ground with gold flakes, finely decorated in gold, red, and silver takamaki-e and hiramaki-e. The inrobuta (flush-fitting) stacked boxes depict a bamboo basket with a handle tied at the top with a red ribbon, the tassels embellished with gyobu-nashiji. The basket is filled with chrysanthemum blossoms, while the interior of the lid shows two additional blossoms. The interior boxes are finished in nashiji with gold fundame rims.
