A POLYCHROME LACQUER ‘BLOSSOMING MAGNOLIAS’ BOX AND COVER Japan, 20th century, Showa era (1926-1989) Of rectangular form with softly rounded edges, the fitted cover and sides finished in lustrous dark-brown lacquer and decorated in layered red, green, and creamy-white lacquer with gilt highlights. The decoration forms a continuous composition of blossoming magnolia branches amid dense foliage, extending seamlessly across the surface of the box and evoking the arrival of spring. The underside is sprinkled with gold flecks against a glossy black ground. The interior is fitted with a small matching tray, both the tray and box finished in fine nashiji, while the underside of the tray is similarly embellished with scattered gold flecks.
