SHOAN: A FINE INLAID RINPA-STYLE LACQUER KOBAKO (SMALL BOX) By Sasaki Shoan (born 1947), signed Shoan Japan, Heisei period (1989-2019) Of rectangular form with a gently domed cover, the box finished in fundame and finely decorated in gold takamaki-e and hiramaki-e, further enriched with aogai (mother-of-pearl) inlays. The fitted cover (inrobuta) and sides depict an elegant composition of plum blossoms and branches rendered in shimmering mother-of-pearl, their delicate forms contrasting with the restrained gold lacquer decoration. The sides are further embellished with a flowing wave pattern, while the underside and interior are finished in lustrous black lacquer. Signed underneath SHOAN. SIZE 11.3 x 8.4 x 9.3 cm Sasaki Shoan (born 1947) is a contemporary lacquer artist affiliated with the Japan Kogei Association, renowned for his refined maki-e and raden techniques and his innovative use of textured ishimeji grounds. His work frequently incorporates the delicate interplay of gold lacquer and mother-of-pearl, particularly in tea ceremony utensils such as jikiro (food containers) and natsume (tea caddies). A highly accomplished craftsman, he received an award at the 25th Japan Traditional Kogei Kinki Exhibition in 1996. His works, together with those of his wife Sachiko, have been exhibited at institutions including the Kyoto Culture Museum. The present work reflects the enduring influence of the Rinpa tradition, one of Japan’s most celebrated decorative styles. The term Rinpa, meaning “school of Korin,” derives from Ogata Korin (1658–1716), whose bold compositions, simplified natural motifs, and sophisticated use of luxurious materials profoundly influenced generations of artists and craftsmen. Revived throughout the modern period, Rinpa aesthetics remain particularly influential in lacquer, where the combination of elegant natural imagery, metallic decoration, and inlaid materials continues to inspire contemporary artists.
