KAZUO: A LARGE LACQUER ‘POMEGRANATE’ STACKED BOX WITH INTEGRATED SUZURIBAKO (WRITING BOX) By Kazuo, signed to the tomobako Japan, Showa period (1926–1989) Finely crafted in rectangular form, the outer case decorated in gold and iro-e takamaki-e, combined with carved red lacquer, against a textured reddish-brown ground. The design depicts leafy pomegranate branches with ripe fruit, several split open to reveal their seeds. The case contains three fitted, stackable boxes, decorated in gold and silver takamaki-e over a lustrous roiro ground with a lozenge pattern enclosing stylized floral motifs. The uppermost tier forms a writing box (suzuribako), fitted with a rectangular inkstone with gold fundame edges and a silver water dropper incised with scrolling vines. The interiors are lacquered black.
